Individual and general protection for when emergency measures have to be taken.

General and individual protective equipment to be used when emergency measures have to be taken or involve particular risks that must be on board the vehicle in accordance with section 8.1.5 of the ADR.

 

Regulations

Safety regulations for transport units 

Every transport unit must have the following equipment on board:

  • One chock per vehicle, of appropriate dimensions for the maximum mass of the vehicle and the diameter of the wheels.
  • Two self-supporting warning signs
  • Eye wash liquid; and

for each member of the vehicle crew :

  • A fluorescent vest or clothing (e.g. similar to that described in the European standard EN 471),
  • Portable lighting apparatus,
  • A pair of protective gloves, and
  • Eye protection equipment (e.g. goggles).

Additional equipment required for certain classes:

  • An emergency evacuation mask shall be worn by each crew member on board the vehicle for hazard label numbers 2.3 or 6.1,
  • One shovel,
  • A sewer inlet shutter,
  • A collecting vessel.


ACTIONS IN CASE OF ACCIDENT OR EMERGENCY

In the event of an accident or emergency that may occur or arise during transport, vehicle crew members shall carry out the following actions when it is safe and practicable to do so:

  • Apply the braking system, turn off the engine and disconnect the battery by activating the switch when available;
  • Avoid strong ignition sources, in particular, do not smoke or activate any electrical equipment.
  • Put on the fluorescent vest and place the self-supporting warning signs as appropriate;
  • Keep transport documents available for recipients upon arrival;
  • Do not walk on spilled materials, do not touch them and avoid inhalation of gases, fumes, dust and vapors by keeping on the side from where the wind is blowing;
  • Whenever it is safe to do so, use fire extinguishers to extinguish small/injurious fires in tires, brakes and engine compartment;
  • Vehicle crew members shall not act against fires in cargo compartments;
  • Whenever possible to do so safely, use on-board equipment to prevent leakage into the aquatic environment or sewage system and to contain spills;
  • Move away from the vicinity of the accident or emergency, advise others to move away and follow the advice of the emergency services;
  • Remove all contaminated protective clothing and equipment after use and dispose of safely.
