Regulations

Regulation No. 73

Regulation No. 73 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) describes the uniform provisions concerning the approval of commercial vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers with regard to their lateral protection.

The scope of application of the Regulation applies to the side protection of complete vehicles of categories N2, N3, O3 and O4. It does not apply to tractors for semi-trailers; trailers specially designed and constructed for the transport of very long loads of indivisible length, such as beams, steel bars, etc.; vehicles designed and constructed for special purposes to which it is not possible, for practical reasons, to provide such lateral protection.

Instructions

Category N Vehicles equipped with a propulsion engine and intended for the transport of goods and having at least four wheels, or having three wheels if their maximum mass exceeds 1 ton.

Category N2Vehicles used for the transport of goods having a maximum mass exceeding 3.5 tons, but not exceeding 12 tons.

Category N3: Vehicles used for the transport of goods having a maximum mass exceeding 12 tons.

Category OTrailers (including semi-trailers)

Category O3Trailers with a maximum mass exceeding 3.5 tons, but not exceeding 10 tons.

Category O4Trailers whose maximum mass exceeds 10 tons.
